Updated: Well, let's talk about it. New 25% Tariffs on Goods from Canada & Mexico

Update 4/9/2025:

In a surprise to no one, as of today, we've been notified by all of our OEMs that price increases are on the way across the board.

While we had hoped these changes would be limited to Canada and Mexico, the expansion of a minimum 10% tariff on imports from any country, along with compound tariffs on most others means that, for now, everything is going to cost more.

We'll roll out these price changes only as they are imposed on us.

This isn't a money-making opportunity for small businesses it's simply an added cost on top of already rising expenses.

We appreciate your continued patience and support as we all navigate these increasingly challenging times.

Update 3/26/2025:

We have some news...

:( The bad news: We told you we wouldn't update you unless we needed to adjust our pricing in-step with any OEM's adjustments.

Unfortunately yesterday, we were notified that one of our wholegoods (and parts) suppliers will be adjusting prices beginning as soon as April. These price adjustments will take effect soon nationwide, impacting all retail channels, not just Mowers And More.

Quote from the bulletin from the Senior Director of Marketing, on Surcharge & Price Change Notification - Finished Goods & Replacement Parts:

"I am writing to provide you with advanced notification of a surcharge for parts and...finished goods...that will be implemented next month...During the past 60 days, our business has been impacted by additional tariffs...related to both materials and purchased components. While our team has been working to mitigate the associated cost impacts, we have reached the point where additional action is necessary...You will receive an updated price list...with detailed pricing...early next week."

:) The good news: Although some of the new tariffs affecting our industry start at a baseline of 25% (and increase from there) the bulletin yesterday suggests we can expect changes of less than 10%. (This is subject to change, but rest assured: we are in lockstep with all our distribution partners. When they lower our costs, we will immediately adjust your pricing down as well). The steady decline in inflation since June 2022 has likely contributed to most of our suppliers holding off on price increases for 2025 so far.

Original 3/6/2025 Below:

As you may have heard, a 25% tariff is now in effect on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico.

Unfortunately, this includes outdoor power equipment, parts, supplies, and raw materials used in our industry.

What We Know So Far

Who enforces it?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) collects the tariff at the border. The importer (in our industry, it is usually manufacturer) must pay before goods enter the U.S.

When did it start?

The presidential executive order went into effect on March 4, 2025. Nearly all products are affected.

How does it work?

A 25% tariff is added to the total cost of imported goods. For example, on a $10,000 order, the importer (typically the manufacturer) will pay their supplier $10,000 and an additional $2,500 to U.S. government at the port of entry.

What does it cover?

In our industry, the tariff applies to products and services like:

-New (and used) equipment and accessories

-Parts and accessories

- Supplies

-Raw materials

- Warranty repairs done in Canada or Mexico (e.g. refurbishment, and sometimes repairs done on industrial agriculture machinery)

What This Means for You

Since most manufacturers import some combination of equipment, parts, and raw materials, these tariffs will eventually be passed onto dealers and, over time, customers may see higher costs.

At Mowers And More, we’ve fought to keep prices stable despite rising costs, often absorbing increases personally to avoid, when possible, passing it onto our customers. During COVID, we raised prices only ONCE (and temporarily at that!) while our costs climbed. On the other hand, when the manufacturer dropped the surcharge, so did we. (Do the CEOs in their ivory towers do that? We don’t know, we’re really asking? For a friend, of course. Anyway, moving on! )

We held parts pricing at 2019 levels until 2023, even during the most volatile market our business had ever seen

(and we’ve been around a long time! *Just ask Tim, he’ll tell you he worked here for at least 100 years*).

We’ve also endured several consecutive difficult winters due to a changing snow season in the Hudson Valley. There’s only so much we can do to absorb these costs. In recent years, we’ve been seeing a learning curve when trying to plan for this new weather pattern. Longtime residents of know as well as we do, the weather is very different than it was 40 years ago. The business has not seen before and we are in the process of reassessing our seasonal plans.

Why Are We Sharing This?

Because we’re not a faceless corporation. Everyone at Mowers And More (including Kevin & Victoria) are local lifetime residents of the HV like many of you, and our customers are our community. Like you, we feel the daily pressures (personally and professionally) of rising utility and grocery costs, rent, taxes, insurance, medicine, etc.! We don’t get to flee to our 3rd yacht when things get tough. We’re all right here with you.

On the topic of community; why do we share this?

We know this is a challenging time for small businesses and communities everywhere. If sharing our tough but real life experience helps even one business owner or community member feel less alone, then it’s worth it.

We’re here, it's not you, it's just a really difficult time, and we get it.

Final notes on the tariffs,

Any price adjustments due to the tariffs will only happen when our suppliers and manufacturers notify us that our costs are increasing.

For transparency, there will still be price increases (or decreases!) unrelated to tariffs, as manufacturers typically adjust pricing quarterly. Those periodic changes almost always much smaller than a 25% hike and often adjust prices down as well, unless it's a petroleum product-in which case your guess is as good as ours.

We appreciate your understanding and will keep you updated on any important developments if we need to make them. Otherwise we'll just be here helping our customers and doing our best in spite of a continuously challenging times. We have some more interesting blogs planned, we promise.

Thank you for your continued support of our family business, We couldn’t do it without you!
